You don’t get a second shot at launch night. Rockstar says GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and digital pre-loading for eligible purchases opens November 12. If your console is already stuffed with everyone’s games, that’s your deadline to clear space, not launch day.

The Picks

How big is GTA 6, really?

The PlayStation Game Size tracker reportedly listed a 210GB download for GTA 6 on PS5 in late October 2026. Rockstar has not confirmed that number, and no Xbox size has been published at all. Treat 210GB as a reported figure, not a guarantee, and plan for more room than that. A day-one patch could easily push the install size up after launch, the same way it has for other huge open-world games.

That matters because most consoles don’t have 210GB of free space sitting around. Between other big games, system updates, and whatever your kid downloaded last weekend, you’re probably closer to “full” than you think. Check your storage menu tonight, not on November 11.

Fixing it on PS5

Sony’s own requirements for a PS5 internal upgrade are specific: a PCI-Express Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD, between 250GB and 8TB, rated at 5,500MB/s or faster, with some kind of heatsink or heat-dissipation mechanism. Not every fast NVMe drive on the shelf meets all of that, which is why a drive built specifically for PS5 is the easier path.

The WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD for PS5 (2TB) is built around that spec. It’s officially licensed for PS5, the heatsink is sized to fit the console’s M.2 slot without modification, it runs PCIe Gen4, and the 2TB model is rated up to 7,300MB/s read. It also carries a 5-year limited warranty.

A 2TB internal upgrade gives you enough headroom for GTA 6 at its reported size plus everything else you already own, so you’re not deleting games every time something new drops. If you’ve never opened up a PS5 before, the install itself is simple but there are a few steps worth getting right. Our full PS5 SSD upgrade walkthrough covers it start to finish.

Fixing it on Xbox

Xbox storage works differently, and it trips people up. You can move games optimized for Xbox Series X|S onto a USB drive to free up space, but according to Seagate’s own support documentation, those games have to be moved back to internal storage or a Storage Expansion Card before you can actually play them. A USB drive is just overflow parking for current-gen games. Older Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles are the exception: those play straight off USB, no moving required.

That means if your internal drive is full, a USB stick alone won’t get GTA 6 running. You need either free internal space or a Storage Expansion Card.

The WD_BLACK C50 Storage Expansion Card for Xbox (1TB) is built for exactly this. It’s officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S, plugs straight into the expansion slot on the back of the console, and uses the Xbox Velocity Architecture so games run at the same performance as internal storage. It also supports Quick Resume, and comes with a 5-year limited warranty. We don’t recommend other expansion card brands here because this is the one with the matched spec sheet.

The parking lot option: a portable SSD for both

A portable SSD is the cheap way to stop deleting games you’ll want back later. The Samsung T7 Shield 1TB is USB 3.2 Gen 2 and rated up to 1,050MB/s read, and it works as external storage for both PS5 and Xbox libraries.

Here’s the catch, and it’s the same on both consoles: it cannot run GTA 6, or any current-gen game, directly. PlayStation’s own support documentation says PS5 games have to be moved back to console storage before you can play them, and Xbox works the same way for Series X|S titles. Use it to shuffle off games you’re not actively playing (shelve the backlog, keep the storage), then move GTA 6 onto the freed-up internal space or the C50 card.

If you don’t own either console yet

If the house is choosing between consoles for GTA 6, the official list prices as of their last changes are a real factor. Sony’s PlayStation Blog has the PS5 with disc drive at $649.99 since April 2, 2026. Microsoft’s Xbox pricing update puts the Xbox Series S 512GB at $499.99 since August 1, 2026 (via Windows Central).

The PS5 console with disc drive (1TB) comes with a 1TB SSD and plays both PS5 and PS4 discs, which matters if anyone in the house has a disc collection already.

The Xbox Series S (512GB) is the cheaper entry point, all-digital with no disc drive, targeting 1440p gaming and up to 120 FPS with supported content and display. But be honest about the 512GB number: it’s not fully usable space. Reports at launch put usable storage closer to around 364GB after the system software takes its share (an unofficial figure, reported by The Brag, not a Microsoft spec).

That means a Series S bought fresh will likely need a Storage Expansion Card almost immediately once GTA 6 and a couple of other games land on it. Budget for the console and the WD_BLACK C50 together, not the console alone, if GTA 6 is the reason you’re buying.

One more thing worth saying clearly: GTA 6 is only announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Older consoles and PC aren’t part of this launch window, so don’t plan storage fixes for hardware the game isn’t coming to.

Quick checklist before November 12

  • Check your current free space on PS5 or Xbox tonight.
  • If you’re under 250GB free, start clearing or upgrading now, don’t wait for pre-load day.
  • PS5: internal NVMe upgrade is the permanent fix.
  • Xbox: Storage Expansion Card is the only way to add space that can run the game, USB alone won’t do it.
  • Either console: a portable SSD can free up room by storing games you’re not using right now, but it can’t run GTA 6 itself.
